Lezing en workshop Costas Douzinas:
The Normative Sources of Empire

Op woensdag 22 oktober geeft Costas Douzinas een lezing in het kader van de lezingenreeks Voorbij Westfalen: zelfbeschikkingsrecht en interventies na de natiestaat.

Costas Douzinas (Birbeck College, University of London) publiceert zowel over mensenrechten en politieke filosofie als over esthetica. Hij is onder meer co-auteur van Law and the Image: The Authority of Art and the Aesthetics of Law (1999) en auteur van The End of Human Rights (2000). In zijn lezing in Leuven vraagt hij naar de normatieve grondslagen van de hedendaagse politiek. Mensenrechten kunnen bescherming bieden tegen onderdrukking en uitbuiting, maar tegelijk worden ze gebruikt als voorwendsel voor de vaak gewelddadige expansie van een hegemoniale wereldorde.

De lezing gaat door op woensdag 22 oktober om 20u in de raadzaal van de faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen, Parkstraat 45, 3000 Leuven. Op donderdag 23 oktober om 10.30u volgt een workshop in het HIW. Lecture and workshop Costas Douzinas:
The Normative Sources of Empire

On Wednesday October 22 Costas Douzinas will give a talk in the series of lectures Beyond Westphalia: Sovereignty and Interventions after the Nation-state.

Costas Douzinas (Birkbeck College, University of London) has written extensively on legal and political philosophy, aesthetics and critical theory. He recently published Human Rights and Empire: The Political Philosophy of Cosmopolitanism (2007) and Adieu Derrida (2007). This lecture will examine the normative characteristics and metaphysical foundations of our age. The paradox of human rights is that while they offer defences against power they also increasingly target life, regulating the body and defining the human.

Costas Douzinas will give his lecture on Wednesday October 22nd at 8 pm in the raadzaal of the Faculty of Social Sciences in Leuven. On Thursday there is a workshop at 10.30 am.
